Job Responsibility:
We are seeking an experienced bioinformatician to join our team that develops and maintains a large web-based analysis resource for the infectious disease research community, such as the Bacterial and Viral Bioinformatics Resource Center (BV-BRC), for NIH and CDC funded projects. In this role, you will provide integrated access to genomic data, analysis services, and visualization tools to the public health research community focusing on bacterial and viral infectious diseases, including SARS-CoV-2. In this role you can expect to:
- Apply bioinformatics and machine learning techniques to research problems in the life sciences with an emphasis on using computational approaches for analyzing bioinformatics data and detecting sequence patterns in a variety of contexts, including bacterial and viral genomic and metagenomic datasets.
- Develop and apply computational models for experimental data, provide measures of uncertainty, and participates in interdisciplinary discussions aimed at the design of new experiments. (Problems typically involve the construction of computational models for phenotype and/or class prediction from genomic sequence data and other omics data).
- Report on results of research including publishing scholarly papers in scientific journals, giving presentations at conferences, meetings, and seminars, and participates in the preparation of reports and proposals required by funding agencies to obtain and continue funding support.
This position is located onsite at Argonne National Laboratory; 9700 S. Cass Ave., Lemont, IL Position Requirements
- Master's or PhD in in bioinformatics, computational biology, computer science, biology, or a similar field. Advanced degree preferred.
- Strong knowledge of bioinformatics analysis techniques and tools.
- Experience with NGS data analysis workflows, including genome assembly, annotation, sequence alignment, small nucleotide polymorphism detection, and transcriptomic analysis.
- Experience with bacterial and viral genomics, metagenomics, and comparative genomics analysis.
- Fluency in Perl or Python.
- Experience with building complex web application using Dojo or ReactJS.
- Experience with JavaScript based visualization frameworks, such as D3, cytoscape, or dojo.gfx
- Familiarity with the Unix command line environment and commands.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to think independently and innovatively to develop exceptional technical solutions.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to write research reports and publications.
- Good organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

- RD2: Masters degree and 3+ years of experience or a PhD and 0+ years of experience, or equivalent.
Preferred skills:
- Strong knowledge of machine learning and/or statistics is preferred.
- Considerable collaborative skills, including the ability to interact well with external collaborators.
