Description: To help the front end run as efficiently as possible by providing courteous, accurate, and speedy attention to customers; by training and supervising cashiers and carryout's; and by maintaining safety and security standards at all times. Responsibilities:
  • To greet and thank customers, respond to their questions/requests/complaints, and explain store policies in a courteous manner.
  • To anticipate traffic and call for front end help as needed to maintain high level of customer service.
  • To supervise the checkout of customers by cashiers and carryout's, and the cleaning, blocking and work performed by front end employees by monitoring how their scheduled hours are spent, and by monitoring breaks and lunches.
  • To continually train cashiers, carry outs, service desk and cash office clerks by coverage of focus items, cashier problem logs, and one-on-one teaching and supervision.
  • To constantly be alert to external and internal security issues, and to implement prevention of security problems through strict enforcement of all company security policies and procedures.
  • To assure the safety of self, customers, and employees at all times by strict enforcement of all company safety policies and procedures.
  • To ensure front-end staff is adequately trained.
Task of the Job - This job generally includes:
  • Ability to respond to customer questions and responses.
  • Ability to respond to and communicate with co-workers.
  • Work on tile or concrete for a maximum of 4 hours in duration.
  • Unload customer purchases from and to cart, 10 to 15 lbs. each.
  • Mobility:
    • To complete grocery/produce price check in aisle, approximately 75 yards.
    • To move along front and backside of check lanes assisting customers and supervising front end employees, approximately 70 yards.
    • Unload customer purchases to and from cart, 10-15 lbs. each.
    • Move a maximum of 40 lbs. up to 15 feet.
  • Pick up items from floor/case/shelf/cart.
  • Attain merchandise on the check lane or cart, and to clean check stand/belts/equipment.
  • Operate cash register keys.
  • Handle cash, checks, WIC vouchers and checks.
  • Handle paper/plastic bags.
  • Handle store's multi-page ads.
  • Grasp and handle wet/cold/hot grocery products.
  • Recognize merchandise, customers, scanner light, amount tendered, cash, checks, WIC vouchers and checks, coupons, shelf tags, and signs.
  • Recognize the “beep” from scanners.
  • Communicate with customers (greeting, thank you).
  • Use the intercom system.
  • Read labels, signs, tags, ads, checks, WIC vouchers and checks, numbers, and cash register keys.
Work Environment:
  • Inside work with variations in heat/cold/dust/humidity caused by the opening of store entrance doors.
Qualifications: Required
  • Strong mathematical ability (add, subtract, multiply, divide). Able to count and verify cashier change, checks, WIC size/count, food stamps, and coupons.
  • Ability to give/receive complex verbal instructions/descriptions to/from supervisors/co-workers/ front end personnel concerning store policy/procedures and use of equipment.
  • Ability to pass basic physical examination and drug screen.
  • Work and educational history demonstrating stability.
  • Basic reading/writing ability; able to read instructions, labels, printed paper and forms.
  • Ability to make judgments concerning customers and the checkout of purchases.
  • Good interpersonal communication skills and ability to handle customer complaints professionally.
  • Good understanding of, and ability to use check stand, service desk and cash office equipment.
Preferred
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Prior experience operating a cash register, scale, intercom.
  • Prior experience in a customer service type of job.
  • Prior supervisory experience.
  • Troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
