Job Responsibility:
POSITION SCOPE
The person in this full-time position (open to remote) will be responsible for idea generation, art direction, and freelance illustration management as well as hands-on designing and file packaging for our Children's and Graphic Novel books. This position reports to the Executive Design Director and works closely with Editors and Print Production.
The successful candidate will be instrumental in shaping the visual and stylistic direction of our Children's and Graphic Novel Books. We are looking for someone who has experience working on children's books with a particular skill in creating styles and contemporary engaging designs for middle grade (ages 8-12) and YA (14+) children's books.
Designers work on a variety of projects designing both covers and interior text layouts. Day-to-day tasks include creating concept visuals, developing typography, liaising with freelancers and illustrators, and working alongside the wider team to create the best package for each book.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Work closely with our team to understand the vision and requirements for each book.
- Collaborate with illustrators and incorporate their assets into the book layouts.
- Overseeing budgets and freelancers and contracts, and negotiate fees and contracts with freelance designers, illustrators, and photographers
- Create designs that are modern, cool, and visually captivating for a young audience.
- Ensure that the layout, typography, and overall syntax of the books are coherent and appealing.
- Be adaptable to feedback and able to iterate designs in line with our brand's vision and standards.
- Collaborate regularly with managing editorial, design, production, sales, and marketing as needed/requested.
- Deliver quality sample design files for catalog and sales materials and preflighting and preparing print-ready files for the printer on time and within budgetary guidelines.
- Ensure brand identity and design quality standards are maintained.
ESSENTIAL SKILLS
- Proven ability to concept, direct, and execute marketable products
- Demonstrated experience or interest in graphic novels
- Excellent time management skills; ability to organize and complete multiple projects, often with aggressive deadlines
- Ability to work effectively within a team structure
- Strong design sense; keen eye for style, color, and typography
- Attention to detail
- Strong ability to take and give creative direction
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor's degree in art, graphic design, or related field or experience
- 5+ years prior experience in art direction and design for children's books and/or longform media
- Publishing industry experience preferred
- Proficiency in Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, and Acrobat Pro required; Microsoft Office 365 preferred (Teams, Word, Excel, OneDrive, PowerPoint)
