The LAUNCH Program

Our program is for nursing students who are midway through their nursing program and have completed a medical, surgical and/or pediatric clinical rotation. This 12- to 14-week paid summer internship includes a four-day orientation, additional clinical orientation to an assigned unit and the opportunity to work closely with a nurse manager, preceptor and supervisor. As a LAUNCH Nurse Trainee, you will experience what it really is like to be a pediatric nurse and you will be able to complete all the tasks a certified nursing assistant may perform. For 2020, the program will have two start dates: May 13 and May 28.

In collaboration with the multidisciplinary health care delivery team, under the direction and supervision of the Registered Nurse performs basic nursing care activities to a defined group of patients. Qualifications Minimum Education Specific Requirements and Preferences Completion of the second year of a Baccalaureate Program (preferred) or the first year of an Associate Degree Program. Completion of one college level course in development and one in physical assessment with passing grade. Must be an active student in an accredited nursing program and provide documentation each semester. Minimum Work Experience Completion of a college level clinical rotation in a hospital setting and/or long term facility. Required Licenses and Certifications CardioPulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Required Skills/Knowledge Must maintain good academic standing in an accredited nursing program and make progress toward graduation. Functional Accountabilities Direct Patient Care 1. Provide direct patient care under the supervision of the Registered Nurse 2. Collect data and accurately documents information on appropriate forms/flow sheets. 3. Perform activities as assigned by Registered Nurse and reports any recognized changes in vital signs, color, breathing, behavior, consciousness level, or change in neurovascular status of limbs. 4. Provide basic nursing care, which may include IV maintenance and termination, basic wound care, simple burn care, chest PT, catheter care, etc. 5. Assist patients with performing ADL's or total care needs (bathing, dressing, toileting, grooming and feeding). 6. Assist with transport and transfer of patients as directed. Patient Flow & Unit Efficiency 1. Maintain a neat and orderly environment. 2. Provide a safe environment for patients, e.g. side rails up, ID band in place, call system available, etc. 3. Assemble equipment/supplies as directed by Registered Nurse for examinations/procedures. 4. Assist team members with examinations/procedures as directed. 5. Prioritize tasks and special request. 6. Complete assigned patient care tasks promptly with minimal assistance and reports inability to complete task to Registered Nurse. Communication 1. Use tactful/diplomatic communications with patients, families, visitors, and care team members/hospital personnel. 2. Use basic verbal and nonverbal communication skills with patients and families recognizing different levels of education and cultures. 3. Orient patient, family and visitors to the policies and procedures of the unit and Hospital as needed. 4. Respond to questions/request in a helpful manner. 5. Answer patient/family/visitor questions regarding unit routines/activities and refers other inquires to appropriate personnel. 6. Seek assistance from care team member when confronted with an unfamiliar situations or problem. Responsibility 1. Follow all hospital/departmental policies and procedures. 2. Accept direction from Registered Nurse in assigned area and charge nurse. 3. Seek confirmation before making decisions in unfamiliar situations. 4. Adhere to principles of pediatric safety by identifying & reporting safety hazards to charge nurse. 5. Remain on unit during assigned tour of duty, notifying charge nurse and appropriate care team members when leaving the unit for patient care related errands or assigned breaks. 6. Use downtime productively during assigned tour of duty. Education 1. Attend all scheduled education session. 2. Collaborate with all assigned team in the development of the assignments and capstone project. 3. Consult with nurse educators/scientist to apply evidence based practice to capstone project. 4. Prepare and present/deliver capstone project at directed 5. Assume responsibility by seeking learning opportunities on and off the unit through shadowing experience, attendance nursing or hospital grand rounds and/or meeting attendance. 6.
