Job Responsibility:

Transportation Senior Manager The Center for Neighborhood Technology (CNT) seeks a talented and committed individual to support our work on transportation policy, which aims to improve the equity and sustainability of the transportation system.

Position Description CNT is seeking a professional with a strong commitment to the goals of transportation equity, addressing climate change, and meaningful community engagement, and an interest in achieving these goals by influencing government policies, practices, and investments.

The Senior Manager will report to CNT's Managing Director of Transportation and Sustainability and be part of the Transportation and Sustainability team, a diverse group of talented professionals ranging in experience from early career to decades of knowledge, including award-winning transportation advocate, Jacky Grimshaw. The position includes the following activities:

  • Manage several cutting-edge national transportation equity projects.
  • Support the team by providing expertise on federal and state transportation policy.
  • Evaluate infrastructure funding and financing, and identify ways to improve equity,
justice, and climate impacts of investments.
  • Collaborate with team members on advocacy to city, county, regional, and state
officials regarding transportation equity and sustainability priorities
  • Work with government agencies, including consulting contracts and external advocacy
to improve practices and outcomes.
  • Coordinate with staff members across CNT departments to bring their expertise in
land use, housing, nature-based solutions, and analytics into projects.

CNT is engaged in a broad and growing set of projects and coalitions to expand transportation access, inclusive decision-making, and decarbonization. The Senior Manager is expected to be an excellent project manager with a proven track record of accomplishments who can help CNT meet its goals and contribute insights that lead to meaningful change in the equitable transportation landscape. Ongoing and upcoming projects include:

  • Technical assistance as part of a national team to help local governments work with
community-based organizations (CBOs) to meet sustainability and equity goals and begin the repair of damage to community that transportation investments have caused.
  • Infrastructure prioritization projects: analysis of the equity and sustainability impacts of
state and local transportation investment plans, recommendations for improvement, and coordination with advocacy partners to create change.
  • National research to document best practices for equitable engagement with the public
and CBOs and to understand impacts of transportation investment on racial inequities.

Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities This position will utilize the following skills, knowledge, and abilities:

  • Commitment to transportation equity, environmental justice, and sustainability
» Knowledge of emerging issues in transportation, climate, and the built

environment, and understanding of their potential to affect our cities and broader society.

  • Deep knowledge of urban planning, resilience, and transportation.
» Experience working with federal, state, regional or local governments, and/or

transportation agencies and ability to provide relevant technical assistance on transportation equity issues.

  • Strong analytical and decision-making abilities.
» Deep knowledge of the transportation equity field and the transportation

funding and policy process, matched with strong policy analysis skills, and mixed methods research experience.

  • Proficiency in managing large teams and complex projects.
» Demonstrated ability to manage complex projects with multiple busy partners

to create meaningful accomplishments while attending to project administrative and budget details.

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
» Willingness to engage with external stakeholders, including government, CBOs,

private sector, and the media; write clearly and compellingly; and collaborate with a multidisciplinary team of colleagues.

  • Demonstrated leadership in project outcomes.
» Capacity to work in a mission-driven organization to achieve challenging goals.

Minimum Requirements: Bachelor's degree with 6 years of experience or Master's degree with 4 years of experience.

Salary, Benefits, and Location The salary for this position starts at $80,000, negotiable based on skills and experience.

CNT offers 20 vacation days, 12 holidays, 10 sick days, and 2 personal days annually, and a competitive benefits package. We respect life-work balance and are supportive of staff with families. CNT permits a flexible work from home practice and will maintain a flexible schedule in the long term. CNT expects all staff to be vaccinated against COVID-19 or be willing to become vaccinated after their hire.

This full-time position may be based anywhere in the U.S. The Senior Manager will be expected to travel to Chicago several times per year, as well as attend occasional in-person conferences and meetings in other locations.
